Using a Fluke 87 True RMS Multimeter requires several steps to ensure accurate and safe measurements. Here's how to use it:

  1. Preparation:
  • Safety First: Always prioritize safety. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to standard safety procedures.
  • Check the meter: Inspect the multimeter and test leads for damage. Replace any damaged parts before using.

2. Understanding the Controls:

  • Rotary Switch: Used to toggle between measurement modes (e.g., voltage, current, resistance).
  • Input Terminals: Different jacks for various measurements.
  • Buttons for various functions such as HOLD, MIN/MAX, and REL.

3. Voltage Measurements:

       1. Set the rotary switch:

  • To adjust the AC voltage, turn the rotary switch to V~.
  • To adjust the DC voltage, turn the rotary switch to V⎓.

          2. Connect the Test Leads:

  • Connect the black lead to the COM terminal.
  • Connect the red lead to the VΩ terminal.

           3. Measure:

  • Touch the probe tips to the circuit where you want to measure the voltage.
  • Read the value displayed on the screen.

4. Measuring Current:

              1. Set the Rotary Switch:

  • For AC: Turn the rotary switch to A~.
  • For DC: Turn the rotary switch to A⎓.

               2. Connect the Test Leaders:

  • Connect the black lead to the COM terminal.
  • Connect the red lead to the appropriate current terminal (A for high current and mA/µA for low current).

                 3. Measure:

  • Break the circuit where you want to measure the current, then connect the meter in series.
  • Read the value shown on the screen.

5. Measuring Resistance:

              1. Set the Rotary Switch:

  •  Rotate the rotary switch to the Ω symbol.

              2. Connect the Test Leads:

  • Plug the black lead into the COM terminal.
  • Plug the red lead into the VΩ terminal.

              3. Measure:

  • Apply the probe tips to the capacitor leads.
  • Read the value shown on the screen.

8. Additional Functions:

  • Min/Max/Average: Use the MIN/MAX button to track the minimum, maximum, and average values over time.
  • Hold: Press the HOLD button to freeze the current measurement.
  • Relative Mode: Use the REL button to establish a reference value and calculate the relative difference.

9. Auto/Manual Ranging:

  • The Fluke 87 can automatically select a range, but you can also set it manually by pressing the RANGE button.

Tips:

  • When measuring unknown voltages or currents, begin at the highest range and work your way down to avoid damaging the meter.
  • Disconnect Power: Before measuring resistance, continuity, or capacitance, make sure the circuit is de-energized.
  • Calibration: Regularly calibrate your multimeter to ensure accuracy.

By following these steps, you can effectively use a Fluke 87 True RMS Multimeter for various electrical measurement
